The majority of individuals in prostitution are in situations of coercion, either internal coercion/self-harm behavior or external coercion from someone else. Many of these individuals are financially vulnerable, and approximately 60 percent have been subjected to abuse during childhood. At “sex markets” and brothels around the world, even ones sanctioned by the state, individuals who have been trafficked and sold are exploited.
