The sexual purchase act makes prostitution more dangerous and forces it underground

Some people argue that the Swedish Sexual Purchase Act makes life more dangerous for individuals in prostitution since when the buyer is criminalized this leads to sex purchasing moving underground and to less safe venues. The truth is quite the opposite: the Act provides protection for individuals in prostitution. Because people who sell sex are not criminalized, they can more easily contact the police and help organizations. Prostitution cannot simply go underground and “disappear.” If the sex buyers can find it, so can the police. It is actually often thought that because selling sex is not a crime in Sweden, the Sexual Purchase Act has made it easier to leave prostitution.
